What should I do after a hit and run?

Being in a car accident is stressful enough, but when you're the victim of a hit and run it can be even more so. That's why it's important that you know just what to do after a hit and run accident occurs, which can increase your odds of receiving justice while also ensuring that you and other motorists remain safe. State Farm offers the following information you can take the right steps if involved in a hit and run.

Contact law enforcement

It's best to contact law enforcement soon after an accident occurs. Once arriving on the scene they'll be able to redirect the flow of traffic to prevent additional crashes while also taking down information for the police reports. These reports are extremely useful when filing an accident claim, as they establish an objective version of events on what exactly transpired. Make sure you take down the officer's name and number so you can reach out for a copy of the report later.

Gather information

When speaking with law enforcement try to provide as much information as possible. This includes the make, model, and color of the fleeing vehicle, the direction it sped off in, where the accident occurred, and any information regarding the license plate (even if you were only able to take down a partial number). Additionally, photos of the damage your vehicle sustained can also be helpful.

Stay on the scene

Whatever you do, it's a must that you remain on the scene until the police arrives. If you pursue the fleeing driver you could put yourself and others at risk. Additionally, police may actually cite you for leaving the scene. You're not permitted to leave the scene of an accident for any reason, unless it's to receive emergency medical treatment.
